Buying guide
Key references
| Ref. | What it is | US retail |
|---|---|---|
| 126500LN | Steel Daytona, black Cerachrom tachymeter bezel, white or black dial | $16,900 |
Which one I'd pick
White vs black dial: same price at Rolex. The white 'panda' dial is the more iconic look; black is easier to live with. Buy the one you'll wear.
New vs pre-owned: $16,900 at retail if an Official Rolex Jeweler will sell you one. On the secondary market you're paying roughly double.
What to check before you buy
- Box and papers: a Rolex warranty card that matches the serial on the watch is the single biggest resale factor.
- Service history: ask when and where it was last serviced. A Rolex service record helps resale.
- Chronograph function: start, stop and reset should be crisp, and the pushers screw down. Fakes are common at this price, so authenticate before you pay.
Alternatives worth a look

- Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional: The other legendary chronograph, under retail grey-market. (42 mm stainless steel, Calibre 3861, retail $7,800 (.001, hesalite, bracelet); $9,000 (.002, sapphire, bracelet))
- TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph 39 Glassbox: A racing chronograph at a fraction of the price. (39 mm stainless steel, Calibre TH20-00, retail $7,250 (CBS2210.FC6534, dealers' listed retail))
History
Rolex has made the Cosmograph Daytona since 1963. Its name refers to Daytona Beach, Florida, where racing flourished in the early 20th century, and it was built for drivers to time laps and work out average speed.
The model has come in four generations: the second in 1988 introduced a self-winding movement, the third arrived in 2000 and the fourth in 2023. Rolex's calibre 4131 uses a vertical clutch to start the chronograph.
