Which one I'd pick
New vs pre-owned: new at $9,225 is right at the pre-owned median ($9,200). New is the pick.
What to check before you buy
- Box and papers: a brand warranty card matters for resale. Grey-market new watches may carry the dealer's warranty instead of the brand's, so ask which one you're getting.
- Chronograph: check that the 1/10th-second hand starts, stops and resets cleanly.
- Fakes and red flags: avoid prices far below the grey-market numbers above, stock photos only, or sellers who won't show the caseback, clasp and warranty card.
Alternatives worth a look
- Rolex Cosmograph Daytona: The obvious comparison, at more than double the price pre-owned. (40 mm Oystersteel, Calibre 4131, retail $16,900 (126500LN-0001))
- Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional: Manual-wind chronograph icon, below retail. (42 mm stainless steel, Calibre 3861, retail $7,800 (.001, hesalite, bracelet); $9,000 (.002, sapphire, bracelet))
- Breitling Navitimer B01 Chronograph 43: In-house pilot's chronograph, 32% off today. (43 mm stainless steel, Breitling Manufacture Calibre 01, retail $10,700 (AB0138211B1A1, black dial, steel bracelet))
History
Zenith unveiled the El Primero on January 10, 1969. It was the first high-frequency automatic chronograph movement.
When the brand's owners later abandoned mechanical chronographs, watchmaker Charles Vermot preserved the El Primero, which let Zenith bring it back.
Zenith launched the Chronomaster Sport in January 2021 with the El Primero 3600, running at 36,000 vibrations an hour so the chronograph can measure tenths of a second, with about 60 hours of power reserve.
Zenith employee Charles Vermot secretly kept El Primero tooling and plans after production stopped in 1975, enabling its 1984 revival.
