Which one I'd pick

Hesalite (.001) vs sapphire (.002): the hesalite version is the Moon-era formula (Omega says it's inspired by the 4th-generation Speedmaster worn on the Moon) and $1,200 cheaper at retail. The sapphire version adds a scratch-resistant crystal. If you want 'the Moonwatch', I'd get the hesalite. If you hate scratches, get the sapphire.

History

Omega launched the Speedmaster in 1957. The first model, the CK 2915 'Broad Arrow', was a 38.6 mm steel chronograph with a tachymeter scale on the bezel.

On March 1, 1965, NASA qualified the Speedmaster for all manned missions after a punishing test programme. Four years later Buzz Aldrin wore one on the lunar surface during Apollo 11, and the 'Moonwatch' name stuck. In 1970 a Speedmaster was used to time a critical manual engine burn on the crippled Apollo 13, and Omega later received NASA's Silver Snoopy Award.

In 2021 Omega moved the Moonwatch Professional to the Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 3861, still manual-wind, with a 50-hour power reserve, and kept the asymmetric case, step dial and dot-over-90 bezel of the fourth-generation watch that went to the Moon.

Fun fact

During Apollo 13, Jack Swigert used his Speedmaster to time a critical 14-second engine burn for the return to Earth.
