Key references
| Ref. | What it is | US retail |
|---|---|---|
| 126710BLNR | Blue-and-black Cerachrom bezel ('Batman'), black dial | $11,800 (Oyster, -0003) |
| 126710GRNR | Green-and-black bezel, crown on the left side | $11,800 (Oyster, -0004) |
Which one I'd pick
BLNR vs GRNR: same price, same movement. The BLNR 'Batman' is the classic look. The GRNR's left-side crown is the oddball, which you'll either love or find awkward, so try one on first.
New vs pre-owned: at retail it's $11,800 if an Official Rolex Jeweler will sell you one. Pre-owned is available today, but the middle of the market asks roughly 50% to 80% over retail.
What to check before you buy
- Box and papers: a Rolex warranty card that matches the serial on the watch is the single biggest resale factor.
- Service history: ask when and where it was last serviced. A Rolex service record helps resale.
- Fakes and red flags: GMTs are heavily faked. A 'Batman' listed near or under retail is the biggest red flag. Buy from an established dealer and have a watchmaker check the movement.
Alternatives worth a look
- Tudor Black Bay Pro: Tudor's 39 mm GMT with a fixed 24-hour bezel, below retail grey-market. (39 mm stainless steel, Calibre MT5652, retail $5,075 (M79470-0001))
- Longines Spirit Zulu Time: A true GMT with a ceramic bezel for a fraction of the price. (39 mm stainless steel, Calibre L844.4, retail $3,550 (L3.802.4.63.6))
- Rolex Explorer (36 mm): A simpler Rolex tool watch, closer to retail on the secondary market. (36 mm Oystersteel, Calibre 3230, retail $7,900 (124270))
History
Rolex launched the GMT-Master in the mid-1950s, developed with Pan Am for its pilots and navigators. Rolex dates it to 1955; Wikipedia's article says 1954. The 24-hour hand and two-tone bezel let a crew read a second time zone at a glance.
The GMT-Master II line moved to ceramic bezels. From 2013 to 2019 Rolex made the steel 116710BLNR with a blue-and-black Cerachrom bezel, nicknamed 'Batman', and in 2018 it brought back the red-and-blue 'Pepsi' on a new steel model.
In 2022 Rolex added a green-and-black bezel version with the crown and date on the left side of the case. Today's steel models run on the Calibre 3285.
The red-and-blue bezel became known as "Pepsi"; the blue-and-black version introduced in 2013 is nicknamed "Batman".
