Which one I'd pick

36 vs 40 mm: the 124270 is the original size and wears small on modern wrists. Try both if you can; Rolex sells an Explorer 40 too.

New vs pre-owned: the gap to retail is smaller than for a Submariner or GMT. If an Official Rolex Jeweler offers one at $7,900, that's the deal.

History

Rolex introduced the Explorer in 1953 as a tool watch for mountaineers. Wikipedia describes it as designed for Sir Edmund Hillary's Mount Everest expedition.

The 124270 keeps the familiar formula: a black dial with 3, 6 and 9 numerals lit with Chromalight, and a smooth bezel. Rolex also makes a 40 mm Explorer.

In 2021 Rolex brought the Explorer back to its original 36 mm size with the ref. 124270 and Calibre 3230.
