Which one I'd pick
New MT5400-U vs 2018 M79030N: the new one is thinner, Master Chronometer certified and has T-fit on every bracelet. The older M79030N is the value play: $4,150 new grey-market today, roughly $1,200 under a new bracelet BB58 at retail.
Black vs burgundy: black is the classic. The burgundy M7939A1A0RU-0001 is the bolder take, based on a Tudor prototype from the '90s that never went into production.
What to check before you buy
- Ref matters: listings say 'Black Bay 58' for both generations. Check the ref (M79030N vs M7939...) before comparing prices.
- Box and papers: a Tudor warranty card matters for resale. Grey-market new may carry the dealer's warranty instead of Tudor's five-year guarantee.
- Fakes and red flags: popular Tudors get faked too. Avoid prices well under the pre-owned ranges above and sellers who won't show the caseback, the clasp and the card.
Alternatives worth a look

- Rolex Submariner: The big brother. Expect to pay double or more. (41 mm Oystersteel, Calibre 3230 (no-date) / 3235 (date), retail $10,050 (124060); $11,350 (126610LN))
- Oris Aquis Date Calibre 400: Swiss diver with a 5-day in-house movement. (41.5 mm stainless steel, Oris Calibre 400, retail $3,900 (Oris US))
History
Tudor's ref. 7924 'Big Crown' of 1958 was the brand's first Submariner rated to 200 m, with an enlarged screw-down crown and a thicker case.
In 2018 Tudor introduced the Black Bay Fifty-Eight as a modern tribute to it: a 39 mm case, 200 m water resistance and the new COSC-certified Manufacture Calibre MT5402.
The new edition keeps the look but updates the case (11.7 mm thick), the bezel and crown, cuts the dial text to two lines, and moves to the MT5400-U, certified both COSC and METAS Master Chronometer, with a 65-hour power reserve and T-fit clasps on every bracelet and strap.
The '58' refers to 1958, the year of Tudor's ref. 7924 'Big Crown' diver.
