Which one I'd pick
Which one: the steel AB0134101B1A1 with black dial is the core model, and the one I verified prices on. Breitling also offers blue, silver and copper dials and red gold versions; prices differ, so compare by full ref.
Fit: at 15.1 mm thick it's a substantial watch. The Rouleaux bracelet is a big part of the appeal, so try it on if you can.
What to check before you buy
- Box and papers: a Breitling warranty card matched to the watch, plus the COSC certificate, help resale. Grey-market new may carry a dealer warranty instead of Breitling's.
- Chronograph function: check start, stop and reset, and that the date changes properly.
- Fakes and red flags: Breitling chronographs are commonly faked. Be wary of prices far under the pre-owned range and sellers without caseback and card photos.

History
The Chronomat was introduced in 1984, when ultra-thin quartz watches were the fashion. Breitling bet on a big mechanical chronograph instead, based on the Frecce Tricolori chronograph developed in 1983 with Italy's aerobatic team.
Its rider tabs on the bezel became a Breitling signature. In 2020 Breitling relaunched the line as the Chronomat B01 42 and brought back the 'Rouleaux' bracelet from the 1984 original.
Today's steel Chronomat uses the in-house Breitling Manufacture Calibre 01, a COSC-certified automatic chronograph with about 70 hours of power reserve, in a 42 mm case water-resistant to 200 m.
