Which one I'd pick
5811/1G vs a pre-owned 5711: the 5811 is the current, bigger (41 mm) white gold model. A 5711 is steel and the 'original' modern Nautilus, but it's discontinued and priced as a collectible.
What to check before you buy
- Papers and provenance: at this level, insist on the Patek Certificate of Origin or extract, and a clean ownership trail.
- Authentication: buy from an established dealer and have an independent watchmaker open it.
- Fakes and red flags: 'too good' prices, rushed wire transfers and sellers who won't meet or use escrow.
Alternatives worth a look
- Patek Philippe Aquanaut: Patek's sportier sibling, in steel. (40.8 mm stainless steel, Calibre 26-330 S C, retail $27,257 (5167A-001))
- Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Selfwinding: Genta's earlier integrated-bracelet icon. (41 mm stainless steel (15510ST), Calibre 4302, retail $31,900 (15510ST.OO.1320ST.06, AP US site))
- Vacheron Constantin Overseas: A luxury steel sports watch that trades much closer to retail. (41 mm stainless steel, Calibre 5100, retail $29,200 (4520V/210A-B128))
History
Patek Philippe introduced the Nautilus in 1976, during the quartz crisis. The first model, ref. 3700, was in steel and designed by Gérald Genta, who had already designed AP's Royal Oak.
In 2006, for the collection's 30th anniversary, Patek introduced the 5711 and 5712, which became among its most popular models.
The current 5811/1G-001 is a 41 mm white gold reinterpretation with a blue sunburst, horizontally embossed dial and the self-winding 26-330 S C calibre.
